The Ultimate Comeback-ish Story
Everyone loves a sports comeback story. The breakaway touchdown in the Super Bowl for the player who tore their ACL last year. The hat trick for the center who was traded from their hometown. The comeback story that the announcers constantly reference. It’s thrilling and comforting.
So I heard this story that when a flamingo is tending to their flock it literally drains the color from them. (Ultimate red flag). Then at some point they “Get Their Pink Back” and their plumages start to flourish and all the colors return. I loved the thought of that. I am about 22 months into this cancer thing but a full recovery is very appealing.
But, I need to call an audible to adjust for reality. Because recently a (extremely skilled) neurosurgeon took an entire piece of my brain while I was awake and then microwaved (radiation) it for a month and which consequently slid me into chemo induced menopause at 32. So while I am getting some “Pink Back,” but it’s pretty pale. Is the comeback complete if I don’t technically “win” the game?
For the Wicked fans, “something has changed within me.” After all of this trauma and hits to the head (literally), it’s unrealistic for there to be no scars. So maybe I’m a little bit more “Wicked” than a “Flamingo,” or maybe my comeback story should just always include a -ish. That gives me grace to define success and craft my goals for my comeback-ish story without expectations of me throwing the perfect game.
Friday morning I get MRI routine scans with contrast to make sure my brain cancer has not progressed. Fingers crossed for clean scans. I want to live out my comeback-ish story as long as I can.
With gratitude, MJ
